GATE is an online examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to post-graduate Programmes (master’s and doctorate) in Indian higher education institutes. The GATE score is also used by some public and private sector organizations for employment screening purposes.

The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration that is divided into two sections: Section A (General Aptitude) and Section B (subject-specific papers). There are a total of 65 questions in the examination, out of which 10 are in General Aptitude and the remaining 55 are from the subject paper. Candidates have to attempt all the questions in both the sections.

The General Aptitude section is designed to test the candidate’s verbal, analytical and mathematical skills. The subject-specific papers test the candidate’s comprehensive understanding of the subject.

The question papers will be available in both English and Hindi versions. Candidates can choose any one version of the question paper. The use of calculators, mobile phones, log tables or any other electronic devices is not allowed inside the examination hall.

The GA section is designed to test your reasoning ability, comprehension and analytical skills. The other sections remain the same, testing your subject expertise in areas such as Engineering Mathematics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics. Here's a detailed breakdown of the GATE exam pattern:

- There will be a total of 65 questions in the exam, divided equally between the GA and subject-specific sections.

- All questions will be multiple-choice type with four options each.

- You will have 3 hours to complete the exam.

- There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

- Your score in the GA section will not be considered for final merit ranking. However, you need to obtain a minimum cut-off mark in this section to qualify for interview rounds conducted by various IITs and PSUs.
